The Florida Department of Environmental Protection approved a Palm Beach County proposal to build islands on the west side of the Lake Worth Lagoon to provide bird and mangrove habitats and cleanse water. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is soliciting comment from other federal agencies and the public before considering the proposal’s approval. Residents of a nearby neighborhood responded positively to the project, which calls for five islands planted with red mangrove seedlings and smooth cordgrass and one island without plantlings. These islands will help protect the shoreline and provide habitat for oysters, which filter the lagoon water.
