Mainland Miami ponders returning neighborhoods to nature in order to survive rising seas

In areas in South Florida vulnerable to sea level rise, regional government officials are considering whether neighborhoods and communities—such as the Shorecrest neighborhood in Miami—should be redesigned, rather than simply reinforced, to accommodate sea level rise instead of just fighting against it. As municipal governments are looking for long-term, low-cost ways to live with water, they’re exploring new concepts and courses of action beyond the standard solution of pumps and pipes, including the possibility of demolishing properties purchased from willing landowners and returning the developed areas back to nature. Some of these new ideas are the result of the Resilient Redesign workshops hosted by the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact.
